Onboarding that keeps day-seven users

August 5, 2026·6 min read·Mariia Petrovska, UI/UX Designer

Most apps lose more than half of their users before the second session. Onboarding is not the tour of the interface — it is the shortest path to the first moment the app is useful.

Value before the account

Let people do the thing before they sign up: scan the label, plan the workout, log the first nap. The account request lands after the app has earned it, and conversion goes up, not down.

Six questions, not twenty

A programme, a plan or a profile needs a handful of answers. Every extra question costs users; every skipped one costs relevance. We keep the questions that change the first screen and cut the rest.

Ask for permissions in context

Notifications after the first reminder is set, camera when the scanner opens, location when the map appears. Contextual prompts get accepted two to three times more often than a wall of dialogs on launch.

Progress the user can feel

A streak, a first result, a completed setup — something visible within the first minute. Empty states should show what the screen will look like once it is used, not a sad icon.

Measure the first session, not the funnel

Time to first value is the number we watch in the first weeks after launch. When it drops, day-seven retention follows; when it does not, no amount of push notifications will fix it.

Takeaway

Design the first three minutes as carefully as the core feature — that is where the product is actually decided.
